Excerpt –

“I didn’t mean to scare you. I’m not going to Atlanta. I’m as close to that place as I ever want to be. Please believe that.”

Color was coming back into her face now. They both turned as the door banged open.

“What’s wrong? What’s going on?” Jim stalked into the room. The glare he shot David was lethal.

“Nothing. I misunderstood something David asked. Jim, nothing happened.”

“I disagree,” David said and met Jim’s eyes. “I upset Meg, but it was unintentional. I need to get into the dreams of someone in Atlanta. Remember, I couldn’t touch your dreams. I didn’t even know where you were until Sid joined you. Then I had access. I was trying to find someone who could do that for me at the CDC.”

“Why?”

“We need to know what’s going on there.”

“Again I ask, why?” Jim had taken the seat beside Meg and his arm was protectively around her. David felt like an ass. He pulled a chair up so that he could face them both.

“I keep thinking about the children since Patti mentioned them. I didn’t even think about the kids. But now that we have these little ones here and they seem to be doing very well, I’m feeling guilty about them. If I can help give them ideas about sanitation or heat, I should.”

After a long moment, Jim nodded. “I hadn’t thought about those kids either,” he admitted. “But Donnie and Chad and Ashley have been real troopers with what we’ve thrown at them.” He glanced down at Meg. “I don’t want her hurt in any way.”

“I swear I’m not talking about anything like that. And I apologize again for upsetting you. I never met this woman, Briana. I know nothing about her but what Patti said last night. If you know of anyone else I should try to contact that’s fine. I was thinking a woman because it’s for the kids.”

“I think Briana could be the right person for that,” Meg said. “I didn’t know her well, but she wasn’t like some of the other women that arrived. She didn’t look down her nose at us, and she did help out in the kitchen sometimes. If she’s the rallying point for the women there now, I’m not surprised. What would I do?”

David glanced at Jim first, and then looked back at Meg. “Before you go to sleep tonight, visualize her. Try to remember any conversation you’ve had with her, place her in the front of your mind. I’ll pick thoughts of her there and try to find her myself. You say she helped in the kitchens, that’s a place I’m familiar with so a memory from there would work.”

“You can really do that?” Jim asked.

“I don’t know. I haven’t tried. I was already in touch with Sid when you guys rescued him. You were the bonus. Trying to contact someone intentionally . . . “ David shrugged. “I feel like I need to try.”

“Yes, I agree. I’ll do that tonight.”

“Thank you and—“

“Don’t. You’re forgiven. I’m the one that overreacted.”

“I, uh, better get to work. Tom wants to clear a small field for an experiment today, and I should be there.” David nodded to Jim and left them.

“Are you really okay?”

“I’m fine. Better than fine. I never even thought about the dreams when he said he wanted an introduction to Briana. I can’t imagine leaving here or having them find us. How did you know anything was going on?”

Jim stared at her for a moment. “I don’t know. I just knew I needed to get to you.”
